Berries were first introduced in GSC, but the Ruby and Sapphire edition of berries has been greatly revamped. Some berries can heal your Pokémon, some are used in contests, and some can raise certain stats temporarily.
Berries in the Advanced generation grow on trees. Each tree can have around 2 or 3 berries, depending on the berry and how the tree was raised. Once you pick the berries, the tree dies, and you can replant berries in the soft ground. Once you have a Wailmer Pail, you can water the berries to sometimes get more berries off the tree.
